Timeline

WhenWhat happened
2001First capture by the Wayback Machine (August). Hand-written HTML, "tested in Opera".
2002–2003The site grows: MP3s, the e-postcard service, the library, forum and IRC chat. The homepage carries the boot-and-handwriting logo "MenVaFan! – Ett litet portalförsök" ("a small attempt at a portal").
2003–2009Regular updates; hosted mini-sites for other groups (a food-and-drink society, a summer picnic with bands and football, a collective).
2009–2016Updates stop. The homepage stays online unchanged, with occasional server errors from 2014.
Nov 2016Last archived capture. The domain lapses around 2017.
2026Domain picked up by new editors and relaunched as a punk magazine, keeping the old section addresses.

The homepage quote

"Ungarna vill bara ta sig in i andra datasystem. Vi skall inte uppmuntra hackers. Tro mig, det är vad modem står för. Eller som vi säger på Datainspektionen: Köper du modem skaffar du problem."

Attributed on the site to Anita Bondestam, then director-general of the Swedish Data Inspection Board. Roughly: "The kids just want to break into other computer systems. We shouldn't encourage hackers. Believe me, that's what modems are for. Or as we say at the Data Inspection Board: buy a modem, get problems." It set the tone — half political, half nerdy.

Badges of the era

  • The EFF Blue Ribbon campaign for free speech online.
  • A SETI@home banner — "join the search for extraterrestrial intelligence".
  • A search box for Project Galactic Guide, a 1990s collaborative guide project.
  • An Indymedia banner and a link to the guestbook: "write something nice :)".

What we did not bring back

The MP3s and the reprinted zines belonged to the bands and writers who made them, so we don't re-host them. The hosted mini-sites belonged to other groups. If you were part of the original site or one of those groups and want something credited, linked or corrected, get in touch.
